William Helmkamp

January 1, 1921 — August 17, 2013

William F. 'Doc' Helmkamp age 92 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday August 17 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Akron graduating from Buchtel High School in 1939. He served in the Army during World War II fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1946 he married the love of his life Elizabeth Murphy. He earned his college degree from the University of Akron in 1949 and worked for Firestone T & R Co retiring in 1982. He personally designed and built a home on Cinnamon Lake enjoyed projects around the house while helping others with their projects. As a dedicated family man camping trips with close friends were one of the cherished traditions each year. Doc enjoyed the company of family and friends enjoying a drink and the lively conversation that followed. A lifetime member of St. Sebastian he was a Eucharistic minister hunger center volunteer and worked in the rectory. He was man of integrity who was kind and generous to all. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth six children: Catherine Helmkamp William (Deb) Helmkamp Christopher (Zivile) Helmkamp James (Jill) Helmkamp Thomas Helmkamp and John Helmkamp many grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Sebastian Parish Foundation or a charity of choice. The family wishes to recognize St. Edwards Nursing Facility and Hospice on Ridgewood Road for their wonderful care. Calling hours are TODAY Monday August 19 2013 from 4-7 PM at the Hummel Funeral Home COPLEY 3475 Copley Rd. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Sebastian Church 11:00 AM on Tuesday August 20 2013. Private family interment of ashes in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
