Van Gorcoff

April 21, 1916 — December 23, 2005

Van B. Gorcoff 89 of Akron died December 23 2005 at the Cleveland Clinic after a long battle with colon cancer. Van was born on April 21 1916 in Johnstown PA. In 1940 he came to Akron and started a confectionary business on the corner of Annadale & Carroll Streets. He served his country in WWII in the U. S. Coast Guard. In 1948 he purchased the Short Stop Inn at 232 E. Exchange St. & his brother Max joined him as a partner in 1958. He was a founding member of the Macedonian Businessman's Club & president for one year of the Summit County Tavern Association. Van was a charter member of St. Thomas Eastern Orthodox Church and the church's president for two years. Van was preceded in death by his parents Helen & Peter Gorcoff first wife Mary second wife Beatrice and his brother Max. He is survived by his son Dennis (Susan) Gorcoff of N. Lawrence OH; sister Christine Bernard of New Port Richey FL; brother Michael of Worthington OH; Step-daughter Sandra (Ralph) Tatum of Canal Fulton OH; Sister-in-law Wanda Gorcoff of Akron; Cousin Donna Gorcoff of Akron; 3 granddaughters 1 grandson 2 great-grandsons 1 great-granddaughter 6 nephews 1 niece and many friends. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday December 29 2005 10 AM at St. Thomas Eastern Orthodox Church 555 S. Cleveland-Massillon Rd. with the procession forming at church. Entombment in the Mount Peace Cemetery with Fr. James Wright officiating. Friends may call at the Hummel Funeral Home 500 East Exchange St. Akron on Wednesday December 28 2005 from 4-8 PM with a Parastas service at 7 PM.
