VIEW VIDEO TRIBUTE Thomas L. Garner 84 went on to start eternal life on October 24 2004. Thomas was born in Akron on December 2 1919; the son of Elizabeth and Clayton O. Garner both deceased. During WWII Thomas served in the U.S. Army. After the war in 1947 Thomas along with his brother Walter opened the Garner Brothers Drive-In Restaurant in Akron which was a popular hang out where customers enjoyed the first commercial double hamburger the ''Tom and Walt'' burger and the first commercial boxed chicken dinner in the U.S.A. In 1956 Tom and Walt opened The Embers Restaurant in Akron. Thomas remained active with several other restaurants until his retirement in 1980. Thomas served as President of the Ohio Restaurant Association for several years in the early 60's. Thomas is survived by second wife Rose and sons Bernie (Kim) Bart (Denise); Chris Thomas R (Amy); granddaughter Katherine; brother Walter and sister Charlene (Vern) Wolfe. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday October 27th at 6:00pm at Hummel Funeral Home at 3475 Copley Rd.
