Thaddeus 'Ted' Kurczynski, MD, PhD, 74, of Akron, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2015. He was born and raised in Hamtramck, Michigan, received his BS and MS at University of Michigan and PhD and MD from Case Western Reserve University. His medical career included faculty and staff positions in clinical genetics and child neurology at the University of Michigan, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve and the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo where he was the founding director of Clinical Genetics. After 25 years in Toledo, he retired to take a position as a clinical geneticist at Akron Children's Hospital. Throughout his career he focussed on the treatment of metabolic disorders and his strong commitment to medical education. Ted's patients and their families along with his colleagues were the beneficiaries of a total dedication to his profession. Ted had a great love and appreciation of nature from the trails and woodlands of Northeast Ohio to the painted deserts of Arizona. But his greatest pleasure was found at the helm of his sailboat navigating the waters of Lake Erie. He was an active member of both the Toledo and Akron Sail and Power Squadrons as well as the Lake Erie Hunter Sail Assn. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Kurczynski; brother, Leon and special cousin, Raymond. He is survived by his wife, Margi; children, Peter (Helen), Karen (Bill), Rhea (Christopher), Kevon (Rebekah); grandchildren, Tal, Layla, Isabella, Austin, Emmett and Henry; sister-in-law, Jeanie; niece, Gayle (Mike), and nephew, Alan. Extended family includes cousins and a network of in laws in New England as well as numerous colleagues, patients and their families. Ted was a member of the the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron where a memorial service will be held on June 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m..
