Sophia Mackey

Sophia A. Mackey, age 100, died peacefully December 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Sophia was born in Carnegie, PA, but lived most of her adult life in Akron, Ohio. She married James P. Mackey in East Liverpool Ohio before moving to Akron where they raised two daughters.

Although she worked intermittently outside the home, she was primarily a homemaker. There was nothing she enjoyed more than to display her Polish heritage by preparing specialty dishes for her family, as she was an excellent cook and baker. Her brownies were legendary.

Sophia is survived by daughters Pola (Michael) Ochsenhirt, Tamara (Thomas) Slopek, grandchildren Jacob Ochsenhirt, Anne (Christopher) McFadden, and Eric (Jennifer) Ochsenhirt. She also leaves three great-grandchildren: Daniel, Michael, and Elliot, as well as nephew, William F. Patrick. The family would like to acknowledge the staff of the Village of St. Edwards Fairlawn for their excellent care of our mom in her final years. We are also grateful to the Summa Hospice and Palliative care program, and the staff of 3East for their kind and expert care.
