Robert J. Horning Sr., 91, passed away Sunday, October 30th, 2016 at The Village at St. Edward. Robert was born in Akron to Urban and Rose Horning. Robert served in WWII and after the war he became the owner of Maple Valley Drug where he was an integral part of the Maple Valley Community. He was an avid amateur athlete who enjoyed handball, racquetball, tennis, waterskiing, biking, windsurfing, golf, and snow skiing. He was an instructor at Boston Mills Brandywine for over 40 years. Bob participated in many local, regional and National Cycling events, including the Senior Olympics where he won many metals and awards. He was a member and past officer in the Akron Derbytown Chorus Barbershop Harmony Society. Robert was preceded in death by his wives Ruth Marie and Annabelle; daughter Nancy Stanley and daughter-in-law Polly Horning. He is survived by his sons Charles and Robert Jr. (Cheryl); Step-son George Prifti (Theresa); grandchildren Brittney (Andrew) Donovan Horning, Robert III Horning, Theodore Horning, Edward (Tuesday) Stanley, Charles Stanley and Richard Stanley; Step-grandchildren Brian, Brenda and Kimberly Prifti; siblings Raymond, Marcella and Charles and special friend Eleanore Carr. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11 am at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 1686 S. Cleveland - Massillon Road in Copley. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:30-7:30 pm at Hummel Funeral Home, 3475 Copley Road COPLEY. Entombment will be at Rosehill Burial Park in Fairlawn.
