Richard 'Dick' Shroy, 77, passed away on August 24, 2016. Richard was born in Akron, Ohio in 1938, the only child of the late Alice and Richard Shroy. He attended St. Sebastian Elementary School and St. Vincent's High School in Akron. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from Loyola University in Chicago in 1963 and his Masters of Arts in Education from John Carroll University in Cleveland in 1973. He was employed as a public school teacher in Cadiz and Cleveland, Ohio, bringing the magic of foreign languages to his students. Personable and friendly, he loved to engage in philosophical conversations with family and friends. A committed Clevelander, he preferred city living and public transportation to life in the suburbs. He loved science, reading books and visiting the library. Richard was a deeply religious man and served as a reader at Christ the King Church in Cleveland. Richard is survived by his first cousins Thomas Gardner of Akron and Meg (Gardner) Fletcher of Hinsdale, Illinois, and by his second cousins, Ann Gardner of Columbiana, Ohio, David Gardner and Karen (Gardner) Menyhart of Avon Lake, Ohio, Lee (Fletcher) Rosenberg of Western Springs, Illinois, and Susan Gardner and Colleen (Gardner) Coats of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday 11:00 am at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave., Akron, where the family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
