Raymond Downey

Raymond E. Downey, age 91, passed away on September 6, 2014 surrounded by family. Ray was born on April 10, 1923 at the Downey Homestead in Campbell, Minnesota to the late Edward and Laurentia Downey. He graduated from Tintah High School in 1940. Following high school, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Mediterranean during World War II. Ray met his future wife, Margaret Tracey at a USO dance in New York City and later married on September 16, 1945. While starting a family, he attended the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy earning his degree in 1951. Ray started his career with Seamless Rubber then moved to Ohio in 1964 to work at Goodyear Tire and Rubber as a research chemist, where he held numerous patents. After his retirement in 1988, Ray continued to work in pharmacy well into his 80's. Ray and Margaret were founding members of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, where they have been involved in many ministries. Ray enjoyed cooking the family dinners on Sunday and his many friendships through the Guardian Angels 39 Club. Preceded in death by his son, Jimmy; sister, Kathryn Newton and daughter-in-law, Jeanette Downey; he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret; children, Ray (Bev), John (Linda), Brian (Linda), Mary (Glenn) Pamer, Michael (Lori) and Patrick (Jodi); 14 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Calling hours will be Tuesday 4-7 p.m. at the Hummel Funeral Home, 3475 Copley Rd. Copley, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 Wednesday at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 1686 S. Cleveland Massillon Rd. Copley, Ohio. Entombment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Guardian Angels Catholic Church.
