Phyllis Titus, 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 3, 2014. She was born in Akron on Dec. 5, 1927. As a young girl, Phyllis had an exceptional photographic memory and a great love of reading, which she combined to win second place in the National Spelling Bee in 1941. As a young woman, she followed her life-long love of reading and received her degree in Library Science from Otterbein in 1949. Phyllis' greatest passion in life was to be of service to others; she was dedicated to bringing about change for peace and improving the lives of everyone around her. She selflessly volunteered for many organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Books for Africa, Friends of the Library, and American Friends Service Committee. She was also an active member of St. Bernard's Church, a community she dearly loved and where she helped feed the hungry at the soup kitchen. She is preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; her daughter, Pat; and son-in-law, David McInturff. She is survived by her children, Mary, Phyllis, Eileen, Charles, Margaret, Maureen, John, Susan, Philip, and Cecilia, and by her 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, with more on the way. Phyllis lived with compassion and love for all people around her and included everyone in her life as family. She leaves behind a loving family that knows we are so lucky to have had her in our lives. She will be deeply missed. A Memorial Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 6, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, (44 University Ave. Akron, Ohio), where friends may call from 9-10 a.m. in the Social Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of the organizations where Phyllis volunteered. Please visit www.hummelcares.com to share memories or condolences.
