Nellie Bertsch

Nellie S. Bertsch 88 of Akron died Thursday October 7 2004. She was a graduate of Buchtel High School and Lake Erie College and married Leonard M. Bertsch in 1938. She taught first grade at Harris Elementary School while caring for her ill husband and continuing to raise their seven children. She retired at age 70 after 26 years of service. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Leonard and daughter Clara Katherine and grandchildren Sarah Katherine Bertsch and Ross Leonard Shriver. She is survived by children Nancy (Edmund) Lynch of Saranac Lake NY; Nellie Saiom Shriver; Susan (Michael) Cull of Columbus; Janet (Wallace H.) Offutt of Darien CT; Leonard M. Bertsch; David (Jan) Bertsch; Kathy (Richard) Slocum of Peninsula; 15 grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her children will remember her especially for her devotion to their father and for her perseverance in the face of great adversity. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday October 11 2004 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent Church. Funeral procession will form at the church. Friends may call on Sunday from 4-8 pm at the Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. Interment of ashes to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent Church the Salvation Army or St. Patrick's Church of Mt. Savage MD.
