Our beloved Mike passed away on the evening of November 7, 2014 leaving us with precious memories and broken hearts. Born in Akron, Ohio on September 6, 1951 to Frank and Barbara Mesek, Mike lived most of his life in the Akron area. He was a 1969 graduate of St. Vincent High School in Akron and served in The United States Navy during the Vietnam War Era. He was stationed aboard two destroyers, initially The USS Hamner and, later, the USS James C. Owens, both out of Treasure Island, San Francisco. Upon completion of his military service, Mike and his wife returned to Akron where he was initially employed by The University of Akron. He retired in 2012 after a 32-year career with the City of Akron. Preceded in death by his father and father-in-law, Mike is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Elaine (Cox) Mesek. His legacy lives on through his beloved family: daughter Rachel and boyfriend Jim Walsh of Powell, OH and daughter Erin Frazee and husband Tim of Charleston, SC and his precious new granddaughter, Lennon. His is also survived by his mother, Barbara Mesek of Fairlawn, OH; six siblings: brothers Dave (Leilani) of Murrieta, CA; Joel (Karen) of North Canton, OH; Tim (Leslie) of Akron, OH and Todd (Camelia) of Lakewood, OH; sisters Laura Hunt (David) of Fairlawn, OH and Nancy Leerschool (Bert) of Kampenhout, Belgium; his mother-in-law Mary Cox; his brothers-in-law Mike and Jeff Cox and their families; his sister-in-law Carolyn Arvay and her family; and a huge extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom he cared for deeply. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, November 11, 4 to 7 p.m., at Hummel Funeral Home, Copley, Ohio. Mass of The Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, at St. Hilary Catholic Church, Fairlawn, followed immediately by a memorial service at The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. The family wishes to thank the truly compassionate nurses and doctors of both the Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Inpatient Care Center and the Oncology Ward of Akron General Medical Center for their care of our Mike.
