Matthew Burns

Matthew Burns ('Junie') 83 of Akron died Friday May 28th 2010 at Rose Lane in Massillon after a short illness. He was a resident of Akron where he resided with his wife Virginia for 54 years. Matt lived in Terre Haute Indiana where he attended Garfield High School. He moved to the area after served in the army during WWII (1945-47). He met his sweetheart and married May 1 1948 in Annunciation Catholic Church where he served as an usher for 50 Years. There he also belonged to The Holy Name Society & Usher Club. He worked at various rubber companies in the area that included: Firestone Goodrich General Tire (GenCorp) retiring in 1984 with 30 years of service. Matt enjoyed bowling & golfing playing on various leagues with his work buddies. He never met a stranger and always had a joke to share causing laughter with everyone he met. For 30 years he made his ritual of golfing an annual event traveling to South Carolina. He also enjoyed dances at Myers Lake and singing his favorite song 'My Way.' He was also a lifetime member of The Mogadore V.F.W. Post #8487. He was preceded in death by his sisters Rose Mary Smith and Margaret McGrew both of Indiana his brother James of Colorado and younger sister Elizabeth Marie of Akron. He is survived by his loving wife Virginia of 62 years son &daughter-in-law Phil & Cindy Burns of Jackson Township grandsons Phillip & Brandon. Mass of the Christian Burial will be on Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at The Visitation of Mary (Annunciation Church) on Broad Street with Father Thomas McCann Celebrant. Internment following at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at The Hummel Funeral Home in Akron 500 East Exchange Street on Tuesday June 1 2010 from 4-8 p.m.
