Maryann Spoonster

June 14, 1954 — December 23, 2015

Maryann Spoonster died a fiery death as she attempted to leap over the Grand Canyon on her moped. She had always dreamed of being a daredevil but sadly her first attempt was her last.......ok, not really. Maryann Spoonster passed away surrounded by family and friends on Dec. 23rd after battling a prolonged illness. Preceding her in death was her husband (Gary Wessel), parents (Joseph and Dorothy Spoonster) and her 3 brothers (Joseph, Richard, and Bill Spoonster). She has left behind her beloved children Ben and Thea Spoonster-Wessel, devoted sister Kathleen Pesata and her sister from another mother, Loretta, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. She also left behind Kathy Klein and her family. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree Magna Cum Laude from Hiram College where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A few of Maryann's many passions include but are not limited to genealogy, chocolate fudge, euchre, Scrabble, politics, helping the disabled which started by assisting her father at his Vocational Development Center in downtown Akron, later becoming a career with her post grad work in Sociology from U Mass. She developed her own business with her friend Robin as a vocational evaluator. Her other passions included being an active member of the St. Vincent Parish Social Concerns Committee, volunteering at Open-M, loving her own 2 children (Ben and Thea) to the moon and back, writing, and taking care of her animals that are just as quirky and medically complicated as her. She has been described by many adjectives. The ones suitable to print are witty, intelligent, artistic, sculptor, articulate, passionate about everything she loved, detesting having her picture taken, and occasionally bratty. A special thanks goes to Dr. Botros and his staff who rescued her from the brink of death many, Many, MANY times! Thank you also to the 7th floor staff at Akron City Hospital who made her life more comfortable as well as the palliative care team who made her passing bearable. A shout out to Joe and his staff at Parma RT. Thank you to Summa Visiting Nurses and Nancy. A light has gone out, she will be profoundly missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Monday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, 164 W. Market St. Akron, Ohio 44303, where friends may call from 9-10am. Interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent Catholic Church. Please visit www.hummelcares.com to share memories or condolences.
