Sister Mary Elizabeth Noel the former Sister Aloysius died at the age of 102 on Saturday February 18 2012 at Regina Health Center. Sister Mary E as she is known was one of eight children of Andrew and Elizabeth Noel. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron now the Dominican Sisters of Peace from St. Jerome Parish Cleveland on September 8 1932. Sister Mary Elizabeth received her MSE from the University of Akron; MA in English from Columbia University New York; and MA in English from Youngstown State University. Most of her teaching career has been at the high school level where she taught English religion and music at St. Vincent High School and Our Lady of the Elms High School Akron for a combined total of 32 years. She also taught at Cardinal Mooney High School Youngstown for 14 years where she was chair of the English Department for four years. From 1985-2007 she assisted our congregational treasurer while also providing community service in various ways at Our Lady of the Elms Motherhouse. For a number of years she volunteered teaching pupils at an inner city public school in the area. Sister Mary E was very active in justice and peace activities and was a member of the Akron Catholic Commission and a member the Cleveland Diocesan justice organization. Being a 'people person' Sister Mary E was always ready to welcome visitors with a smile and a big hug. Because of health reasons she was moved to Regina Health Center Richfield in December 2007. She is survived by sister Catherine Berridge West Carrollton OH and by niece Sister Mary Noel OP and several other nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at Our Lady of the Elms Convent 1230 W. Market St. Akron on Tuesday February 21 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a Wake Service at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday February 22 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
