Mary Helen passed away on May 7, 2023. Born on Christmas Eve, 1924, she became a gift to generations of our family. The daughter of C. Edward and Hermine McSweeney, she grew up in West Akron, where her parents owned and operated a guest house and riding stable at the corner of Pershing Avenue and West Market Street. It was there that she developed her lifelong passion for horseback riding.
Mary attended St. Sebastian Elementary School and graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1942. Following high school, Mary attended The University of Akron and was employed by The Akron Beacon Journal. Soon thereafter, she met her future husband, Milt, and they married in 1950.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Ed, son Steven and son-in-law Mike, Mary is survived by her daughter Elaine Mesek of Akron, son Michael (Chris) of Juno Beach, Florida; daughter Carolyn (Michael) Arvay of Norton; and son Jeff (Amy) of Pace, Florida. She also is survived by eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Mary's sweet, gentle spirit was matched by her sense of humor and her generous compassion toward all she met. She has always been, and will continue to be, an inspiration to the family who celebrates her legacy.
There will not be any calling hours. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11th at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, 44320. Immediately following the funeral service, interment will take place at Rose Hill Burial Park, 3653 West Market Street, Fairlawn, 44333.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of your choice in memory of Mary.
