Marianne (Downey) Mentzer, 85, died on May 11, 2016. Marianne was born in Dillsboro, Indiana on May 29, 1930 to Dr. Frank S. and Mary Louise (Cook) Downey. She was raised in Sidney, Ohio where she graduated high school in 1948. She then attended Ohio University where she met the love of her life, George Mentzer, after which time they settled in Akron together. They were married one day short of 62 years when George preceded her in death in 2013. Marianne was the mother of two children. She devoted her life to caring for her handicapped son David. Marianne was first and foremost a lady who loved fashion, high heels, and making an entrance. She was an avid reader and a Master Contract Bridge player. She loved all cats and most people. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter Christine Ducra and her brother C. Michael Downey, MD. She is survived by her son David of Akron, her son-in-law David Ducra of Statesville, North Carolina, four nieces and a nephew and family friends Jeff and Karen. Special thanks to the staff at Hickory Ridge Nursing Center for Marianne's care. Cremation has taken place. A private service and interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery.
