Kevin O'Connell

Kevin O'Connell age 78 slipped away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday September 18. Born to the late C.A. and Bessie (Brennan) O'Connell and stepson of the late and loving Genevieve (Keane Van Valkenburgh) he was raised in Lakewood and moved to Akron with his devoted wife Joan and family in 1967. He attended Lakewood High and St. Ignatius High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46. Kevin spent his career as a salesman for Quaker Oats Akron General Tobacco and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He spent many years serving the schools of his children: St. Sebastian School Our Lady of the Elms H.S. and Walsh Jesuit H.S. where for many years he performed the duties of Field Coordinator. He was preceded in death by siblings Thomas Geraldine (Guion) and Jacqueline (Lowry). Kevin leaves behind his most loving and devoted wife Joan (Bader) children Timothy (Nancy) O.C. (Erin Denholm) Dennis (Holly Barkdoll) and Christopher (Elizabeth). He also leaves six grandchildren Katie O'Connell twins Madeline & Claire O'Connell Kayla O'Connell and Jordan & Joelle Remmy as well as dozens of cousins nieces and nephews who loved him very much. His surviving siblings include Patricia Egan Kathleen Babbington Richard Van Valkenburgh Moria Malady and Cornelius. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 12:00 at St. Sebastian Church. Burial to follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. in Akron from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Magical Theatre Company Endowment Trust St. Sebastian Tuition Fund or Hospice of Visiting Nurse.
