Kathryn Brune McGuckin 99 years 'young' died on April 11 2011 at the Hospice Care Center on Ridgewood. Kathryn was born on Feb. 7 1912 in West Point Iowa. She was one of eleven children born to Ben and Bernadine Brune. She shared many tales of growing up on a farm in rural Iowa. Many years later at a Brune Family Reunion held in West Point she was able to show unbelieving grandchildren the small bedroom that she shared with her five sisters. As a young adult Kathryn moved to Akron where she met Cletus McGuckin. They were married in 1932 and together they raised five children. She knew how to stretch a dollar and all the children were sent through parochial elementary and high school. Cletus was an Akron Police Officer and retired as a Lieutenant. They were married 54 years. Kathryn is predeceased by her husband; daughter Mary Ann; and eight of her siblings. She is survived by her children: Richard (Janet) Kathleen DeBarr (Bruce) Patricia Malick (Richard) Michael (Virginia) and Maureen Musci (Al). She was 'Grandma' to her 13 grandchildren: Denise McGuckin Michele Monet Karyn Martin Megan Sluiter Laura Feltman Steven DeBarr Amy Tobin Richard Malick Kathryn McGuckin Molly Shaw Dan McGuckin David Musci and Brian Musci. She was a beloved 'Grandma Kathryn' to her 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Genevieve Brune of West Point IA and Evelyn Mansheim of Corpus Chrisi TX and many nieces and nephews. Kathryn was devoted to her family and her Catholic faith. She was an example of how to live with simple dignity and selflessness. She asked for very little from life: a visit from family an opportunity to sing at Mass and a good hand in bridge. She has spent the last four years in the Village at St. Edward's where she will be remembered for her ever-present sweet smile her participation in activities and winning at Bingo. She was particularly fond of sharing stories with Sister Beatrice Fitzgerald O.P. At ninety-nine Kathryn still looked forward to new adventures. Kathryn's family would like to thank the devoted staff at the Village at St. Edward's for watching over her while she lived and to the staff of The Hospice Care Center whose compassionate care helped her on her last journey. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday April 14 2011 at 11 AM at St. Sebastian Church. Friends may call at the Hummel Funeral Home COPLEY 3475 Copley Rd. on Wednesday from 4-7 PM. Cremation to follow. The family suggests donations in Kathryn's memory to the Village at St. Edward Foundation 3131 Smith Rd. Fairlawn OH 44333 or to the Saint Sebastian Parish Foundation 476 Mull Ave. Akron OH 44320.
