Kathleen Leahy Hamlin died May 5, 2014. Born March 12, 1925, Kathleen (Kate) was a life resident of Akron, OH and a graduate of Our Lady of the Elms elementary and high schools, and St. Mary's of the Springs College in Columbus, OH. Kate was the loving, gracious mother of seven children, grandmother 'Grams' to ten grandchildren, and great grandmother to three. Kate was an avid bridge player, golfer, tennis player, reader, plus she loved to travel with her dear sisters. Her passion was flower arranging. Kate was a gifted and accomplished award winning flower arranger and served for many years as a member of the Stan Hywet Flower Arrangers at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. In addition, she was a member of the Akron Garden Club, Akron Children's Hospital Women's Board, St. Thomas Hospital Women's Board and the Junior League of Akron. She was a lifelong member of St. Sebastian Church and belonged to The Portage Country Club. Preceded in death by her husband, Earl William Hamlin Jr., our dear sweat mother is survived by her devoted and adoring family, Helen and Chester Marshall Jr., Ann and John Fairweather, Kathleen Hamlin, Earl Hamlin, Michael and Robin Hamlin, Betsy Hamlin, John Hamlin and Kapila Rodrigo; grandchildren Tucker and Holly Marshall, Michael Hamlin, Caitlin and Billy O'Dywer, Elizabeth and William Fairweather, Earl IV and Henry Hamlin, Kathleen, McKenna and Court Freund, and great grandsons Tucker and Reid Marshall and Rory O'Dywer. In addition, she is survived by her sisters Joanne McCarthy, Rose McMahon, Patricia Monroe, sisters-in-law Donna Leahy and Nancy Hamlin, brother and sister-in-law Richard M. and Yvonne Hamlin, and numerous nieces and nephews. Kate was loved and treasured by her other special family, the Graves and the O'Neill's, whom she cherished. She will be greatly missed by her lifelong friends, Rommey Hearty, Mimi Hutchinson and Natalie Cook; special friends Jan Johnson and Richard Green. A heartfelt and most sincere thank you to the friends and staff at The Village of St. Edward and to her dedicated and supportive caregivers from National Church Residences and Senior Helpers. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11AM at St. Sebastian Church, 476 Mull Ave., Akron. 44320. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 3-6PM at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange Street, Akron. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Helen Barry Hamlin Library Fund, St. Sebastian Church & School, 476 Mull Ave., Akron, OH 44320, The Village of St. Edward, 3131 Smith Rd., Akron, OH 44333 or The Akron Garden Club, 2056 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, OH 44321.
