Julia Whitcomb Glass, born August 12, 1932, passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2018 after celebrating her 86th birthday with her family. Julia graduated with highest honors from St. Lawrence University and attended graduate school at Cornell University where she met her future husband, John Glass. Julia was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, as well as of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She worked for many years as the Activities Coordinator at Manor Care nursing home in Akron. Throughout her life, Julia volunteered with many organizations including the Junior Red Cross during WWII, the Fairlawn West United Church of Christ, the Memorial Society of Summit County, local food banks, and the PTA. Julia provided years of financial support to St. Labre Indian School in New Mexico, St. Lawrence University, the Audubon Society, the League of Women Voters, and Public Broadcasting. Julia was a brilliant lifelong learner and - in the tradition of the Whitcomb Family - maintained a home library of several thousand books including works of literature, language, art and general reference. Long before there was an internet, Julia used this resource to inspire her children and to 'broaden their horizons'. Julia is preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Robert Faye Wright Whitcomb and Louise McNair Whitcomb and her brother, George. She is survived by her children, John, Louise, Robert (Mary) and Richard (Maia), her grandchildren, Robert, Daniel, Kevin, Talia, Katherine, Victor and Angelica, her sister-in-law Paulette Whitcomb and her lifelong friend, Portia Herold in Switzerland. Julia is also survived by her son-in-law, Raul Roxas and her daughter-in-law, Realina Roxas. It was their great skill and loving care that sustained John and Julia in their final years, allowing them to fulfill their wish to remain together in their home of 58 years. Julia was forever optimistic, truly believed that people are inherently good and always sought to improve the lives and happiness of those around her. She will be remembered fondly by those who knew her. Calling hours are from 10 to 11 on August 25, 2018, with a memorial service at 11 at Fairlawn West UCC, 2095 West Market St., Akron 44313.
