John Mellody

MELLODY John Joseph age 78 passed away Tuesday December 22 2009 at Saint Edward's Nursing Home. John was born in Pittsburgh PA to John and Anna (Wilson) Mellody on January 1 1931 the first baby of the year. His family moved to Akron when he was in the first grade. Most of the Wilson family had preceded them. They lived on Maple Street and he attended St. Vincent Grade School. After one year of seminary high school at Mount St. Mary's in Cincinnati he attended St. Vincent High School where he met his future wife. He attended one year of college at John Carroll and completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics and masters in business administration at the University of Akron. John worked many years as an engineer in the automotive industry. John married Mary Jo Seikel on January 2 1954 at St. Sebastian Church. They had ten children one of whom Robert Girard died in infancy. John is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary Jo; nine children: Mary Ann (Ray) Lambert; Sister Kathleen Cordis Mellody VHM; John (Elaine) Mellody Jr.; Sister Maria Anna (Patricia) Mellody SSCJ; Carolyn (Paul) Sutter; James (Diane) Mellody; Sister Mary Johanna (Susan) Mellody O.P.; Barbara Mellody; and Jean (Dave) Horvath; his brother Pat Mellody; eighteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. John was a very devout Catholic. He and his wife have been Benedictine Oblates for over 50 years. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM Monday December 28 2009 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church 476 Mull Ave Akron where procession will begin. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery where Copley VFW Post 7971 and American Legion Post 473 will assist with military honors. Friends and family may call at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E.
