John Gannon

November 16, 1917 — September 9, 2015

John Joseph 'Jack' Gannon, 97, died on Wednesday September 9, 2015. Jack was born on November 16, 1917 in Akron, OH and was a lifetime member of St. Vincent's Parish. He attended Grace and St. Vincent's Grade School and graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1935 and started his favorite job as a milkman. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, served in the Philippines and throughout the Pacific, and was discharged at the end of WWII. During the war, he met Catherine Ann Fisher and they married in 1946. Kate's passing on April 7, 2012 paused the marriage at 66 years, now to be resumed. He is survived by his 11 children: Richard (Maureen) of Park Ridge, IL; Michael of Akron; James (Kathy) Akron; Charles (Judy) of Akron; Patrick of Newnan, GA; Kevin (Angela) of San Carlos, CA; Karen Gannon (Bradd Rosenquist) of Columbus, OH; Tim (Joyce) of Akron; Carol (Jim) Gelsomini of Colorado Springs, CO; Bernard of Golden, CO; Kathleen (Fred) Bost of Plantation, FL; 11 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. We, the family, have several people we would like to publicly acknowledge and thank. To the good people of St. Edwards, thank you for taking Dad in and treating him like both a friend and family after our Mom passed. To Lynn Reed for the friendship and companionship she shared with Dad. A special thank you from the family is extended to brother Bernie for his devotion to both Mom and Dad in their later years. We would also like to thank Joyce, grandchildren Amy and Brian Gannon for taking care of and for being so very involved in Dad's life these final years. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Anna Gannon; his sisters, Mary Ann McGrath, Francis Ambrose, Kathleen Tschantz and brothers, Thomas and James and is survived by brothers Patrick (Margie) and Barney (Sally). Jack excelled in his profession as a salesman, winning many company sponsored contests and he never met a stranger. He liked to dance, play tennis, loved his family, Akron, Ohio and spending winters in Florida. There is one heckuva card game taking place in Heaven tonight! Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 14 at St. Vincent Church Akron, OH. Friends may call from 2:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday Sept 13 at Hummel Funeral Home in Copley. Private burial at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to Daughters of Divine Charity, Leonora Hall/Francisco Residence, or the Dominican Sisters of Peace at Our Lady of the Elms, or St. Vincent Parish, all in Akron.
