John R. Dewell, 73, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2015. He was born on March 27, 1942 in Youngstown. After graduating from Rayen High School, John attended Youngstown University. While there he was a columnist for the university paper and a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and went on to receive his Masters degree from the University of Akron. John spent much of his career in a variety of roles with the Akron Public Schools. Among those were Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal and Coordinator for State and Federal Education Programs. John was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, American Counselors Association, All-City Kiwanis and the St. Vincent de Paul church choir. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Geraldine (Santell), daughter Bernadette Terry, son Timothy (Rachel), grandchildren Allyson, Andrea and Jack. John is preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Warman, father Cecil Dewell, brother Tom Allison, and son in law Jim Terry. Visitation will be held on Wednesday April 8, 2015 from 3pm to 7pm at Hummel Funeral Home, 3475 Copley Rd. Copley, Ohio 44321. Funeral service will be Thursday April 9, 2015 at 11:00am at the funeral home with burial immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery.
