Joan Margaret App died on October 16 of natural causes six days after her 94th birthday. She was born on October 10 1919 in DuBois Pennsylvania. A graduate of DuBois High School she attended Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing Clearfield Pennsylvania and graduated as a registered nurse in 1940. She has been an Akron resident since 1941 working as a nurse at Akron City Hospital and later as the Vice President of Administration at Saint Thomas Hospital from which she retired in 1989. Joan was an active member of Saint Sebastian Catholic Church for many years and then of Saint Hilary Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Thomas Hospital Women's Board. She was also an avid bridge player and an accomplished floral artist. In 1942 she married Seibert K. App Jr (Bud) who after 53 years of marriage preceded her in death in 1995. She is also preceded in death by her eldest son Thomas App of Kerrville Texas who died this year. She is survived by her son Timothy (Theresa Bedoya) App of Baltimore Maryland; daughter Christine (Joseph) Smerick of Akron; daughter-in-law Sherry Williams of Kerrville Texas; grandchildren Michael (Becky) App of Omaha Nebraska Jennifer (Matt Singer) App of Bend Oregon Courtney App of Denver Colorado Kelley App of Bend Oregon Christopher App of Seattle Washington Matthew (Erin) Smerick of Cuyahoga Falls and Jessica Smerick of St. Petersburg Florida; great grandchildren Leila Sophie Graham and Jay; sister Mary Louise Traczyk of Big Spring Texas; and sister-in-law Barbara (Richard) Sweitzer of Ahmerst Massachusetts. The family would like to thank Summa Hospice the staff of Chambrel and her four exceptional caregivers for all of their loving care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday October 21 at St. Hilary Catholic Church (2750 W. Market St. Fairlawn Ohio 44333) where friends may call from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Entombment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Hilary Catholic Church.
