James Gill

View Photo Tribute Here James Joseph Gill age 84 passed away October 15 2008 after a short illness. Jim was born in Akron on September 22 1924 to Mary Jane McGinnis and Aelred Gill. He attended St. Vincent School graduating in 1942. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II in the South Pacific. After the war he attended John Carroll University. He then attended Loyola of California so he could play baseball. He then attended the University of Dayton where he graduated with a degree in business. On November 5 1949 he married Loretta King in Lima Ohio. Although they only shared 6 years together before she passed from this earth she remained the love of his life. He then attended the University of Akron's School of Law. Jim was Executive Director of the Summit County Legal Aid Society during its inception. He spent much of his life as a defender of the poor. Afterwards he went back into private practice. At the end of his career he was a Referee for the Domestic Relations Court. Jim was one of the founding members of the Akron Ski Club originally on Mt. Pleasant Road in Canton. That club was the early beginning of the Boston Mills Ski Club. He served on the ski patrol for 15 years. He enjoyed taking time off to ski with good friends across the country. Jim also loved flying riding his motorcycle on Sunday mornings reading and baseball especially his Cleveland Indians. And of course he was always up for a good debate. He was preceded in death by his wife Loretta (King); mother and father Mary Jane and Aelred Gill. Those left to celebrate and remember his life are his brothers Aelred Bruce (Jeanne) of San Jose CA; sister Generose Marks (Steve) of Akron; sister-in-law Patsy Rousculp and the King family; children Jim and Mary of Akron Michael (Kathleen) of Wadsworth and Terry (Deb) of Rockford IL. He also will be missed by his grandchildren Jamie Zachary Ryan Carey Erin Anna Justin Mark Patrick and Heather; great grandchildren Jackson and Gavin; and many nieces nephews their children and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday October 20 2008 at 9:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church 164 W. Market St. Akron OH. Inurnment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday October 19 2008 at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. Akron from 4 - 7 PM. Memorial donations may be made to Daughters of Divine Charity Francesca Residence 39 N. Portage Path Akron 44303.
