James William Bishop, age 64, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2017, at his home after a short illness, surrounded by his family and friends. Jim was born September 7, 1953 in Toledo to the late Thomas and Estelle Bishop. He was still working at East Manufacturing, where he was a labor relations manager. Jim married the love of his life, Cathy, in 2009 and together they roamed the country, dined at chef's tables, and most memorably at their own. Jim loved Cathy's humor, home cooking, and sense of adventure. Cathy loved his intellect, his enthusiasm for exploring, and that he was tall enough that she could wear heels. Jim was an avid aviator, and along with Cathy, took to the skies in his Piper Cherokee 140, gaining a perspective on life and landscapes. He loved to travel the East Coast, the picturesque south, and escape to the warm Florida weather. He had a knack for technology and sports stats, enjoyed movie night in the home theater, and had a passion for learning. Jim cooked as well as he ate, and made a fantastic homemade pizza. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughters, Mindy Atherton and Jamie Bishop; grandchildren; sister, Mary McGuigan. Calling hours will be Friday 4-7 pm at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St., Akron, Oh 44304. Memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity. Friends are invited to join in toasting Jim and his memory at 8 pm at the Firehouse Grille & Pub, 2437 Canton Rd., Akron. Jim's motto was to live each day in the moment and to not waste a day that God has given you. His loved ones find solace in his 'good death' and take comfort in knowing he no longer needs wings to fly.
