Jack L. Slinger, age 97, passed away on November 5, 2017. He was born on March 26, 1920 in Akron to the late Leo and Ethel Slinger. Jack was a 1938 graduate of Central High School and proudly served our country in the US Army during World War II. He met and married the love of his life, Ruth Mathie in 1941 and celebrated 72 years of wedded bliss. Jack was employed by Goodyear Aircraft, Prudential Insurance Company and CC Supply Company. He was an active member of St. Peter's Parish and then St. Francis de Sales Parish, serving on parish council, usher and Eucharistic Minister. Recently, he was also a member of St. Andrew the Apostle in Norton. Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; brother, H. Thomas; sisters, Marion Dick and Betty Slinger; grandson, Christopher Hoynes and brother-in-law, Jim Mathie; he is survived and will be deeply missed by children, Judy (Dan) Hoynes, Jack Jr. (Cathi) Slinger, Kim (Lenny) Lammlein and Beth (Don) Duke; sister, Mary Lou (Gene) Blakey; brother-in-law, Guy Mathie; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dad was a faithful Christian man displaying generosity and selflessness, putting his wife, children and grandchildren as his top priorities. He truly enjoyed his professional career as a Prudential Insurance salesman, retiring after 30 years. He was then embraced by the Crookston family at CC Supply Company fulfilling a longterm friendship. During retirement, Jack and Ruth loved traveling with their family and life long friends. The family would like to thank the staffs at Catholic Charities Adult Day Care Center and the Memory Care Unit of The Village of St. Edward for all their compassionate care. Calling hours will be 4-7pm Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St. Akron, Ohio 44304. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Thursday, Nov. 9, at St. Francis de Sales, 4019 Manchester Rd. Akron, Ohio 44319. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis de Sales Parish and St. Andrew the Apostle.
