Irene Smith Lewis died peacefully on the morning of April 2, 2016. Throughout the 98 years of her life, she was both practical and purposeful, but it was her helpful nature and the warmth of her personality that always shown through and will be best remembered. Useful purpose is difficult to balance with warmth and compassion, but somehow she always kept the right poise with effortless delight. A 'modern' woman, she blended her career with her family, and managed better than 100% at each. Graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland she began her career before marrying her husband, Evan Hadley Lewis in 1941, who preceded her in death. Full-time career gave way to full-time family plus career throughout her adult life, but she always seemed to have time for other interests - winning a place at the National Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1951, actively engaging at the Akron Woman's City Club along with community bridge and square dance clubs. She traveled widely, beginning with family camping adventures and later to more exotic locals with her husband, with friends and with family. Many will remember her from her nursing at what is now Akron General Medical Center, or from her many years in the office of Dr. Harvey Karam, but more so from her wonderful friendships that seemed to simply sprout up everywhere. She leaves her children Ronald (Nicolai) Lewis, Clifford (Anette) Lewis, Elaine Jackson and Norman Lewis, along with grandchildren Justin (Sarah) White, Geoffrey White and Emily Lewis. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16 at the Bath Church, 3980 W. Bath Road, Akron, Ohio 44333; visitation with family at 10:00am, service at 11:00am.
