Howard Scurry

January 26, 1964 — March 20, 2025

On a crisp winter day in Weirton, West Virginia, January 26, 1964, the world welcomed Howard Gerald Scurry-a man whose heart, as wide as the Ohio sky, touched many and left no soul the same. On March 20, 2025, surrounded by love and memories, Howard took his final bow at the age of 61 in Akron, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy as dynamic and enduring as the music he so adored and the family he cherished above all else.

Howard's life unfolded like a beautiful melody. For 32 cherished years, he walked hand in hand with his beloved Marcella Scurry partner and soulmate. Together, they built a family like no other- a love story blessed with seven children who spread his kindness like sunshine. Who, in turn, blessed them with 17 adorable grandchildren. For Howard, family was everything-his pride and joy, a world filled with laughter, chaos, and endless love. His family was his world- simple as that.

Being a father was a role Howard embraced with open arms and an even wider heart. His life was enriched with the soundtrack of laughter, sibling banter. If Howard wasn't reveling in family time, you might have found him enveloped in the rich melodies of Al Green or the soulful blues of B.B. King-the soundtrack to his life and the backdrop to many moments shared with those he cherished. Whether it was a relaxing afternoon or a spirited family gathering, music played a role, forever echoing in the hearts of those around him.

Music to him was more than sound; it was a feeling, much like the passionate rounds of boxing, where he spent years embodying every ounce of his fighter spirit, each punch, and every bout a statement of his inner strength and tenacity. He was truly as tough as nails, yet he had a heart that was soft, generous, and boundless.

Though tough as nails, akin to his boxing days, Howard was soft around the edges for his family. And speaking of boxing, oh yes, it wasn't just a sport for Howard, it was a way of life. An artful boxer whose strength played out in the many ways he fought for those he cared about. Howard's kindness was undeniable. He was the kind of guy to light up a room, and should you find yourself in need, he might just light up your spirits too. But to make no mistake, he wouldn't think twice to fiercely protect the loved ones in his circle.

Howard was the type of man whose loyalty and kindness spoke louder than words. With a heart bigger than life itself, he was ready to help anyone in need. He would literally give you the shirt off his back, a rare breed of generosity that's hard to find nowadays. Yet, when it came to defending his loved ones, there was no tougher protector than Howard. His legacy of kindness and compassion is a beacon, shining bright through those he left behind.

While he was a fighter, Howard's true strength lay in his kindness. Affectionate and endlessly kind-hearted, he was the kind of person who'd sacrifice his comfort for another. His willingness to give, to be present, and to offer love made him everyone's go-to person.

His journey was not without sorrow. His heart bore the sorrow of loss, having been predeceased by his twin daughters Evelyn Scurry and Hakayla Scurry, his father Foster Scurry Sr., his mother Helena Scott, and his sisters: Regina Combs, Callie Minniefield, Estelle Mitchell, Evelyn Scurry. Also, his brothers: Lawrence Combs, Edward Combs, Foster Scurry, and Glen Scurry. Yet, he surrounded himself with the love of his surviving family: His loving wife Marcella Scurry, his only son Hezekiah Scurry, and daughters Bianca Scurry, Celicia Wilson, Brittany Scurry, and Callie Scipio. Each one carries forward the legacy of a husband, father, and paw paw whose spirit will forever touch their lives.

While we mourn Howard's passing, we focus on the indelible mark he leaves behind. His spirit resides in the laughter, the stories shared, and the bounding love that connects his family and friends. Howard's love was a gift-one that remains with us always, enfolding us in a legacy of warmth, courage, and unwavering love. He may not be around in the physical form but take comfort because his spirit touches everyone who had the fortune to know this titan of love and generosity. Howard lives on, right where he always wanted to be - in our hearts.
