Henry Noethen

Henry C. Noethen passed away peacefully on the morning of May 7 2012 just five days shy of his 90th birthday. By his calculations he was 89.9863 years old. Henry was born in Akron Ohio on May 12 1922 the second son of Henry and Ruth Noethen. He attended Hower Trade High School leaving a few weeks before graduation to join the United States Navy in May 1940. Henry was a Machinist First Class serving on several destroyers throughout the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He received four battle campaign stars and one unit citation for his service. On May 12 1950 Henry married the lovely Civita Tuccillo and together they raised their four children. They created a life filled with family gatherings instilling the importance of family unity in their children. Henry's greatest gifts to his family were his stellar examples of hard work and discipline and his insatiable desire for life-long learning. He was an accomplished tool and die maker spending much of his career at the Ford Motor Company Stamping Plant in Walton Hills. He then developed a second profession as a teacher at the Adult Vocational Program and Garfield High School. After retirement he continued to teach part-time well into his 70's. He was a member of St. Vincent Church Sons of Italy and the Civil War and World War II Roundtables. The son of a German immigrant and a Mohawk Native American Henry developed a unique perspective on life. His distinct outlook fueled hours of family discussion as he debated philosophy religion politics unions and any other topic that was raised at the dinner table. He was a lover of the Great Books and an avid student of mathematics. His greatest pride was his family led by his always understanding wife and culminating in the accomplishments of his granddaughters. Henry was preceded in death by his wife Civita (2005) and his brothers Joe and Ray (Alex). He is survived by his children John (Meg) of Fairlawn Ohio David of Akron Ohio Diane (Peter) Kalgreen of Akron Ohio and Mark of Chicago Illinois and his granddaughters Elisa and Erika Rowland and Michelle and Emma Noethen. Also surviving are Kristen (Troy) and Ella Kyle Patrick (Dalia) and Ethan Kalgreen and Jeremy Kalgreen. Henry leaves behind many family and friends nieces and nephews all of who will miss his lively conversation. Henry's family would like to express their eternal gratitude to the remarkable staff at Akron Manor Care as well as Akron General Medical Center. Thank you for not only caring for Henry but for taking time to know him. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30AM on May 10 2012 at St. Vincent Church. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 PM at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. Akron where the Sons of Italy Akron Lodge 685 will meet at 5 PM. Interment in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent Church 15 N. Maple St Akron OH 44303.
