Helen S. White February 13, 1922 - October 14, 2018 Helen Sumpter White, age 95, passed away Sunday, October 14, at Ohio Living Rockynol in Akron. Helen was born February 13, 1923 in Fort Worth, Texas, the daughter of Lee R Sumpter and Lucy Risley Sumpter. She completed high school there and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas. She worked briefly for American Airlines in the late 1940s and for the North Kansas City (Missouri) School District in the 1960s. Helen was predeceased by a brother, Lee R Sumpter, Jr. in 1994. She was the widow of Charles A. 'Charlie' White, Jr., who passed away in 2017. They married in 1944 and lived in more than twenty communities around the country during Charlie's military service during WW II and his subsequent 40-year career with Goodyear. His last Goodyear assignment brought them to Akron in 1971. Their life together was characterized by the many long-lasting friendships that they fostered over those decades. Helen and Charlie were active members of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wherever they lived, most recently at Akron's former High Street Christian Church. They were members of the Gardeners of Greater Akron and delighted in the beautiful floral gardens they maintained at their home. Helen and Charlie were bridge players, and Helen was an active golfer for many of her retirement years. They became residents of the Rockynol community in 2006. Helen is survived by a son and his wife, Charles and Linda White of Palmyra, VA; a daughter, Donna Cape of Leasburg, MO; seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Following that service, Helen will be interred with her husband at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman, OH.
