Harold Johnson

Harold Johnson Harold W. Johnson of Cuyahoga Falls died April 6 2004. Harold served as a faithful eucharistic minister at St. Joseph's. Harold was born in Akron Ohio April 25 1924 the son of the late Murl and Leila (Wilkinson) Johnson. He was also preceded in death by brothers Murl Robert and Rolland. After graduation from East High School Harold served in the South Pacific with the 11th Airborne Division 457th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion ''B'' Battery. After World War II he graduated from Hammel Business University and spent his career in the trucking industry retiring in 1987. During his work years he served on the boards of The Akron Club (President 1962-63) the Akron Traffic Club (President 1968-69) and Delta Nu Alpha. On July 3 1948 he married Ruth Schillinger who survives him. Also surviving are their loving children: son Jeffrey Johnson (Diane) of Cary N.C. Janet Hackett (Jeffery) of Fort Collins Colo. and Joy Batley (Daniel) of Fort Collins; and grandchildren Katie and Ben Batley and Jenna and Jessi Hackett. Harold was one of the most dedicated supporters of professional golf in Akron beginning in 1953 when the Rubber City Open was held at Breathnach Country Club and which moved to Firestone Country Club in 1954. During his half century of volunteer work with the golf tournaments his service covered myriad duties including Jaycees Chairman of the 1960 PGA Championship and General Tournament Chairman of the 1968 American Golf Classic. In 1973 he became a Life Member of the Board of Trustees of Northern Ohio Golf Charities. Harold had hoped to work this year at the NEC Invitational under the chairmanship of Tom Krampe. Services will be at Saint Joseph's Church in Cuyahoga Falls on Friday April 9 at 9:30 a.m. Reverend Father James J. Marsick to officiate. Burial at the VA National Cemetery in Rittman Ohio. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday April 8 at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. The family is grateful to have had the services of Visiting Nurse Service especially the loving care of Gail Kubick R.N. and Meredith Driscol M.D. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Visiting Nurse Service Hospice 3358 Ridgewood Rd.
