Known for his love of family and his special way to make us laugh, George Epstein, 90, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2014. Born November 27, 1923 in Bronx, NY, George was a long time resident of Akron, Ohio. He graduated NYC public school and City College of New York before moving to Columbus, Ohio. There he worked on The Manhattan Project for the Army while earning his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from OSU in 1948. It was at OSU that he met and married his love of his life, Lois Allen of Cleveland, Ohio. They moved to Washington, DC where he worked for the Department of Navy Bureau of Ships. He designed the dehumidification system for the 'moth ball' fleet after World War II and supervised the development of air purification methods for submarines during long periods of immersion. After the Navy, he moved his family to Akron to be the Senior Development engineer at Goodyear Aircraft Corp. There, he developed and evaluated high temperature protective coatings for rocket surfaces, later be used in the space program. His true passion for chemistry led him to Alsides, Inc where, for 30 years, he thrived on the challenges of developing new products and materials. As V.P. of R&D, he helped to develop the process to create residential aluminum siding for which he was awarded two US Patents. He retired in 1985. He loved travelling with Lois around the world, visiting their children, playing golf, cards and debating economics. Of all his incredible accomplishments, he took greatest pride in the successes of his two children and four grandchildren.
