Francis Waickman

VIEW VIDEO TRIBUTE Francis Joseph Waickman M.D. was born at home in Akron Ohio on April 22 1923 and died the morning of July 26 2006 in the company of his family. He was in the inaugural St. Sebastian grade school class and graduated from Campion Jesuit High School in 1941 the College of the Holy Cross in 1947 and St. Louis School of Medicine in 1948. He completed his residency in pediatrics at St. Louis University in 1952 and served as an instructor in pediatrics at St. Louis University School of Medicine from 1952 to 1953. After serving honorably in the Air Force from 1953 to 1955 he returned to Akron where he practiced pediatrics and then allergy. He was on the emeritus teaching staff at Children's Hospital an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine and Director of the Part II Instructional Program of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine at the time of his retirement in 2000. He was awarded the Tribune Award in 1941 for overall academic athletic and leadership excellence the Rinkel Award in 1986 and the Forman Award in 1990 by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching from the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy in 1995. He married Marie Kathryn Martin in 1949 and raised a family of 7 all of who remember him with respect and affection. He was an avid skier and a parishioner of St. Hilary Parish. He was preceded in death by his father Leo A. Waickman his mother Catherine Gillhooly Waickman and his son F. Joseph Waickman Jr. He is survived by his wife Marie and his children Tony (Lynn) Ann (John Moore) Mark (Pat) Marianne Bill Mike (Mary Beth) and Kit (Ann Briem) and 13 grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Hilary Church at 9:30 AM. on Saturday July 29. Funeral procession will form at church. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Calling hours will be at Hummel Funeral Home 3475 Copley Rd. COPLEY on Friday July 28 from 4-8 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Hilary Parish Foundation 2750 W. Market St. Fairlawn OH 44333 or Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service 3358 Ridgewood Rd. Akron OH 44333.
