Esther Ferner

May 14, 1912 — July 24, 2005

After living a full life Esther F. Ferner 93 died on July 24 2005. She was born in New Philadelphia OH and lived for over sixty years in the same home in Cuyahoga Falls. Mrs. Ferner graduated from Heidelberg College in 1933 and remained active in its Akron area Women's Club. Most of her long English teaching career was spent at Cuyahoga Falls High School. She was named a Jennings Scholar an honor bestowed upon educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching. Her passion for education did not end with her retirement in 1979. She remained active in organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Xi Chapter serving as its president 1980-1982. She was also a member of the Junior Progressive Study Club. An active member of Bethany United Church of Christ Esther served in many capacities including elder and she was the first female president of Consistory. For almost 20 years up until her late 80's she taught the Bible Discoveries class. Intellectually curious and committed to helping others Esther volunteered at Akron General Hospital and as a tutor for Project: LEARN an adult literacy program. She was also a crossword puzzle editor. Esther will be remembered for her generosity and selflessness in addition to many other fine qualities and talents. Along with giving book reviews she was a dedicated gardener exceptional cookie baker thoughtful correspondent avid bird watcher competitive word game player loyal friend and mentor. She is preceded in death by her husband George brother Donald Fledderjohn and sister Julia Zack. She is survived by her daughter Julia Wolz son John (Jodi) grandchildren Matthew and Christina Ferner sisters-in-law cousins nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on August 13 at 10:00 a.m. Bethany UCC 1235 Broad Boulevard Cuyahoga Falls OH 44223.
