Ernie was born in Akron to Casper and Rosa Stein, newly arrived from Hammelburg, Germany. With the aid of the funny pages, he learned to read English even before starting school and learning to speak it. Fascinated from a young age with all things mechanical and electrical, he became a life-long tinkerer. Ernie excelled in science at Garfield High School, studied political Science and Spanish at the University of Akron and went on to Western Reserve Law School. He practiced law in Akron for over 63 years. In 1957 Ernie married music teacher Mary Louise Anderson. Together they tended their dream property in Copley Township where Ernie planted several thousand trees, were longtime patrons and served on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Light Opera, and were active members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Wadsworth for decades. Preceded in death by brother Rudy and wife Mary Lou, Ernie is survived by son, Robert Ernest; sisters and brother-in-law Elizabeth (Malcolm, dec.) Anderson, Dorleen Parker, and David Anderson; nieces and nephews Rev. Fr. Robert E. Stein, James (Majella) Stein, Kathy Hoff, Karen Anderson, Scott Anderson, Dr. William (Lucy) Parker, and Shelly (John Gottschee) Parker; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held at a later date at the Copley Township Cemetery, where he will be interred beside Mary Lou.
