Ellen Givens

Ellen Givens age 67 of Akron passed away on Saturday August 11 2012 surrounded by her family at Akron City Hospital. Ellen was born in Erie PA but lived most of her life here in Akron. She was a 1963 graduate from Buchtel High School where she met her husband of almost 48 years Mike. Ellen is survived by her husband children Michael (Piper) of Hawaii and Melissa (Jack) Simone of Springfield granddaughter Sophia and sister Susan Zachardy. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mary Isabel Durbin and brother-in-law John Zachardy. For 33 years Ellen was a volunteer with the Women's Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children's Services. She also volunteered with Braille Services boy's and girl's bowling leagues at the Fairlawn Bowling Alley and was very active in the Erie Island School PTA. Among her passions were her family and her beloved Cleveland Indians. Ellen also enjoyed gardening reading and her dogs Molly and Maggie. Most especially Ellen loved being a 'special grandma' to Michael Grace and Owen. The family would like to thank Dr. David L. Jackson and the staff of the Acute Palliative Care Unit of Akron City Hospital. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday August 16 2012 at 6PM at the Hummel Funeral home 3475 Copley Rd. Copley. The family will receive friends from 4- 6 PM PRIOR to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Women's Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children's Services P.O.
