Betsy slipped away from her family and many friends on Saturday June 9 2012. She was born on August 25 1935 to Mary and Howard Hines who predeceased her. She grew up very happily on the family farm just outside of West Salem Ohio. She earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kent State University -- where she also met Dick her husband of 54 years. Betsy taught in three different high schools before moving into teaching and administration at Cuyahoga Community College -- where she completed the final 18 years of her career in public education. She was a long-time member of Delta Kappa Gamma -- an honorary society for women in education. Betsy's hobbies and interests over the years included cooking knitting doll collecting camping water skiing snow skiing and sailing. She also enjoyed 'spoiling her three special great nieces. Retired since 1990 she enjoyed small ship expedition travel to such destinations as the Galapagos Costa Rica Panama and Egypt. Betsy rode all over the US on the back of Dick's motorcycle. Over a 25-year period along with another couple she visited many of the lower 48 states and parts of Canada. Betsy's volunteer activities included many years as a TWIG member supporting Children's Hospital. She served several terms as president of her neighborhood group as well as two terms on the TWIG Board. In retirement she also volunteered at Akron General in the Physician's Services office and became very close to the staff members there. In addition to her husband Betsy is survived by her brother Fred Hines and sister-in-law Marjorie Dick's sister Judy and her husband John Arnold. Also by many other family members and friends -- and Rosie her dachshund buddy. A Memorial Service will take place at 6:00 PM on Thursday June 14 2012 at Montrose Zion United Methodist Church 565 N. Cleveland-Massillon Rd Akron 44333. Betsy's family will receive friends for 2 hours PRIOR to the service.
