Dorothy Hunter

June 15, 1944 — January 17, 2012

DOROTHY M. HUNTER 67 left to be with the Lord on Tuesday January 17 2012 after developing pneumonia while fighting pancreatic cancer. Born on June 15 1944 in Mount Vernon Ohio she was the only daughter of Virgil and Verna Snyder. Dorothy spent her first years on the family farm and moved with her mother to a house in Howard Ohio after her dad's death in 1948. She became the valedictorian of Howard High School's class of 1962 and subsequently attended Ohio University. A lifelong reader Dorothy enrolled in Western Reserve University's Library Science program after her 1966 graduation from OU. Finishing her M.L.S. in Cleveland she married Robert E. Hunter in 1967 and moved to Zanesville as the first Library Director at the city's new Ohio University branch campus. Relocating to Akron in 1972 Dorothy served for several years as Head of Reference at Taylor Memorial Public Library in Cuyahoga Falls. From 1988 to 2001 she was the Librarian at Our Lady of the Elms High School in Akron and she last worked as Medina General Hospital's Medical Librarian before retirement. A past president of the local Ohio University Women's chapter she was also Secretary of the Bath Goodtime Club. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 44 years Robert; her son Bob; and daughter-in-law Nancy. Calling hours are scheduled for 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday January 23 at the Hummel Funeral Home 3475 Copley Road. A memorial service will follow at 7:00 PM. Donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society and Our Lady of the Elms.
