Donald Moore

October 1, 1941 — April 8, 2013

Donald J. Moore age 71 passed away peacefully on Monday April 8th at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center leaving behind a treasured legacy as a loving husband father grandfather brother uncle and friend to many. Born in Akron on October 1st 1941 to the late James and Mary Ellen Moore Don attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School in 1960 where he was a stand-out athlete. He was employed as a meatcutter at Kroger and Giant Eagle for 40 years. Don married the love of his life Mary Rita Kurtz on November 13th 1965. In addition to his parents Don was preceded in death by his brother James Moore and his sister Sharon Roman. His beloved nephew Patrick Roman followed Don to Heaven on Tuesday April 9th. Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years Mary Rita and his children Mark (Shelley) Moore Melissa (Shane) Mark and Heather (Mike) Schiltz. 'Papa Don' will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Nadia Cross Ellie Schiltz Samantha Moore William Schiltz Matthew Moore Caroline Schiltz and Noelle Mark. Additionally survived by siblings Pat (Barb) Moore Colleen (Tim) Mosher Peggy (Dave) Shriber brothers and sisters-in-law Ken and Margaret Lauck Tom and Rose Ann Russell and Tom and Gayle Roman and many cherished nieces nephews and friends. Don truly had a passion for living and was an avid golfer hunter outdoorsman and sports enthusiast. He was a gifted story and joke teller and had a natural ability to make people laugh and feel comfortable. Don was warm caring kind charismatic hardworking and was loved by everyone who knew him. His family considers October 2nd 2004 his second birthday when he received the gift of life a double lung transplant at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Despite his many health struggles over the years Don never complained and always remained positive and grateful. He led his life as a devout catholic and was a true example of courage and character. The family wishes to sincerely thank the many doctors at UPMC especially Dr. Maria Crespo and Dr. Matthew Taylor and his staff at Pioneer Physicians Network in Akron for their many years of loving care. Calling hours will be held on Friday April 19th at Hummel Funeral Home 500 E. Exchange St. Akron from 5-8 PM. A memorial mass will take place at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church 1905 Portage Trail Cuyahoga Falls on Saturday April 20th at 1PM with Father Thomas McCann as celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family encourages everyone to consider giving the gift of life through organ and tissue donation; Life Banc may be reached at 888-558-LIFE.
