David Joseph Towell David Joseph Towell, 81, of Akron, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Dave was born August 24, 1932 in Akron to David and Lorena (Mulson) Towell. He graduated from St. Vincent High School. After serving with the U.S. Army in the Korean War, Dave attended the University of Akron. He graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Upon his father's death in 1960, Dave succeeded him as president of Dave Towell Cadillac, becoming the youngest Cadillac dealer in the country at age 27. Dave received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1973 and 1977. He was appointed to the Ohio Motor Vehicle Dealer Board in 1986, later serving as its president. Dave earned the Master Dealer Award from the Cadillac Motor Division of General Motors Corporation in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 2004. He retired from Dave Towell Cadillac in 2005. Dave is a proud alumnus of the University of Akron, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Dave served as president of the Lamplighters, Hilltoppers, and the school's national Alumni Association. In 1976, Dave was named an Honored Alumnus of the University of Akron. In 1997, he was awarded the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Akron College of Business. Dave loved the game of golf. He was the general chairman of the 1977 NEC World Series of Golf tournament. He is a member and past president of Akron Golf Charities, Inc., and member and past president of Akron Golf Charities Foundation. Dave was a member of Fairlawn Country Club, Firestone Country Club, Olde Florida Golf Club (Naples, FL), and Sharon Golf Club. The only thing Dave loved more than cars and golf was his family. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 51 years; sons David Towell, Michael (Susan) Towell, Daniel (Siobhain) Towell, Timothy Towell, and Thomas (Jennifer) Towell; 14 grandchildren; and sister Patricia Claypool. Dave is remembered fondly by his family and friends, all of whom came to know and enjoy his warm personality and quick Irish wit. Calling hours will be held Friday, August 15 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 East Exchange Street in Akron. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Avenue in Akron at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
