Dan T. Hayes, age 92, passed away on Veterans' Day, Friday, November 11, 2016. He was born in Fayetteville, TN, but lived in Akron, Ohio since the age of 2. He graduated from Central High School, served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and graduated from The University of Akron. In his 30-year career in the Akron Public Schools, he was a teacher, counselor, principal, and director. After retiring, he continued to share his devotion to education and sports throughout the community. He was a charter member of the Akron Silver League and was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame. Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Dorothy; sisters Marjorie and Joanne; and parents Thomas and Owene. He is survived by his dear children Leslie (Mark) Scatterday, Lori (Bob) Zupke, Lisa Tell, and Dan (Laurie) Hayes; and cherished grandchildren Amy (Nick), Jason (Julie), Jeremy, Bobby, Courtney, Daniel, and Jacob. His journey crossed paths with countless treasured friends. Family, education, and sports were his life's passions. Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 14 from 3 to 7 pm at Hummel Funeral Home, 500 East Exchange Street. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 10 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Dan to the College of Education Scholarship Fund at The University of Akron, Department of Development, Akron, OH 44325-2603.
