Dale L. Jackson Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Akron died Friday November 25 2005 after a brief illness. He was born in Bishop Auckland England on May 20 1932 to the late John and Anne Jackson. He was educated at the University of Durham England from which he was awarded a Ph.D. specializing in parasitic insects. He then taught at the University of Guelph Canada before moving to the University of Akron in 1961 where he taught and researched until his retirement in 1995. Dale was the Chair of the Biology Department for over 20 years served on numerous college and university committees and mentored countless students. In the mid-1970s he helped establish a university in Iranian Kurdistan. His research included field work on parasitic insects in the West Indies. Dale had many diverse interests: a large greenhouse he built himself woodworking and especially sailing. Some of his longer sailing trips included transatlantic passsages many of the north atlantic archepeligos and West Indies. Dale is survived by his wife Shirley Anne (nee Scotland); daughter Heather Rebecca Kirschbaum (David); granddaughters Olivia and Alexandra Kirschbaum; sister Diana Duncalfe (Don); brother Neil Jackson; nieces Charlotte Otway (Sam); Louise Jones (Albert); and sister-in-law Joan Jackson all of England. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law Ian and Catherine Scotland of Bermuda and many nieces and nephews in the United Kingdom. Cremation has taken place. Friends are cordially invited to a gathering at the Martin Center Fir Hill Akron on Monday December 5 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
