Charles White, Jr.

Charles A. 'Charlie' White, Jr., age 94, passed away Friday, April 7, at Ohio Living Rockynol in Akron. He was born August 13, 1922 in Coffeyville, KS, the son of the late Charles and Ethel Fletchall White. Charlie was a WWII veteran. He flew 14 missions over Germany, piloting a B-17 bomber. He and his crew were shot down in March 1945 and spent the remaining weeks of the war in German POW camps. Following his return home he completed a business degree at the University of Texas and began a 40-year career with Goodyear, where he served as a manager in a variety of sales and marketing positions. The company transferred him to over a dozen communities around the country; his last assignment brought him to Akron in 1971. Charlie is survived by his wife, the former Helen Virginia Sumpter. She resides at Rockynol. Charlie and Helen were active members of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wherever they lived. He served as a board member of the High Street Christian Church in Akron. He was also a member of the Gardeners of Greater Akron. In addition to his wife, Charlie is also survived by a son and his wife, Charles and Linda White of Palmyra, VA; a daughter, Donna Cape of Leasburg, MO; seven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. A memorial service officiated by Rockynol Chaplain Tim Short will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 12, at the Myrna and Hugh Porter Chapel at Rockynol. The service will be preceded by a visitation period at 1:00 PM in the chapel. Interment will be completed at a later date at the Ohio Western Reserve Veterans Cemetery at Rittman, OH.
