Charles E. Horning, 85, of Copley passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 23 at the Cleveland Clinic. Charlie was born June 28, 1931 in Akron, the youngest of four children. After graduating from Buchtel High School and serving in the Army, he attended the University of Toledo School of Pharmacy. He and a partner opened Copley Pharmacy in 1969 and spent many happy years working with the Copley community. Charlie was married for 50 years to his loving wife, Ruby, who preceded him in death in 2010. Charlie's love of music led him to the Akron Derbytown Chorus, where he was an enthusiastic Barbershop singer for over 45 years. He was already busy planning their July concert in Copley. He enjoyed taking part in their Singing Valentine's. Charlie was the founder of the Copley Bandstand Committee, which is now in its 40th year. Still active, he enjoyed bringing free summer concerts to Copley Circle. Charlie loved being around friends and family and his life was full. He looked forward to Bridge Club with treasured friends, and enjoyed euchre, poker and gin rummy. In addition, golfing, bowling, playing pool, ping pong, and listening to live music were among his many interests, and he was fortunate to have many great friends to share these with. The son of a carpenter, he was quite capable and liked having a project to work on. He was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years. Truly a kind and caring soul, Charlie always took a genuine interest in others and was very encouraging. He had a special place in his heart for children and always made them feel special. In recent years, he often expressed gratitude for the blessings of family and friends in his life. In addition to his wife, Charlie was preceded in death by infant son, Thomas; son-in-law, John McIntyre, Jr.; and brother, Robert. Left to cherish his memory are daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Don Millican; son, Bill; grandsons, Thomas and Matthew (Sarah) McIntyre; Nick (Heather), Daniel (Jacqueline), and Brandon Millican; great-grandchildren, Maria, Olivia and Rocco Millican; brother, Raymond Horning; sister, Marcy Ruhman; special extended family Mary and Patricia McIntyre, John and Joseph Walsh; many loving nieces, nephews and close friends.
