Charles 'Chick' Fletcher passed away peacefully on April 2, 2016 at the VNS Hospice of Ridgewood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, and is survived by his brother, Fred (Sally) Fletcher, his nieces, Robin (Kyle) Migdal, their sons Joe and Sam; Pam (Todd) Lawyer and their children Graham and Madison. Chick was a lifelong resident of Akron and attended the University of Akron until the Army drafted him during the Korean War. After serving his country, he returned to Akron and at age 24, he and his friend and fellow Veteran purchased a used hearse for $150. They revamped it into a living space complete with electrical lights, camp stove, refrigerator, and the works! A friend dressed up the exterior by painting an out of this world bird on snowshoes and Akron, Ohio along one side. The two Vets embarked on a 10,000 mile journey across the states as far as Long Beach, CA having the time of their lives. They were ahead of their time for the year 1952! After returning to Akron, Chick found employment as a surveyor with Kenmore Construction Company from where he eventually retired. He took up the game of golf, which he enjoyed for more reasons than one. He met the love of his life, Joyce Harrison, who was the sister of his golfing buddy. Eventually they were married and made their home in Fairlawn with their two miniature Schnauzers. Although never having children of their own, they loved and enjoyed their nieces, Robin and Pam. Chick and Joyce relished life and each other. Their favorite place to dine was the Diamond Grill, where they were regulars. After retirement, they traveled the Florida Keys, one of Chick's favorite places, to escape the Ohio winters. They enjoyed reading, playing cards and socializing with their many friends and spending time with family. Chick was a Veteran who fought for his country, a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, a loving husband, brother and an amazing uncle. You will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved you. Memorial service will be 11:30 a. Friday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St. Akron, Ohio 44304, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Inurnment to follow at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNS Hospice of Ridgewood and the Veterans.
