CARL EMIL KRILL, JR., MD Our loving father and Opa died on 15 January 2016. Carl was born on 2 November 1933, the son of Dr. Carl E. and Helene R. (Conroy) Krill of Akron. He graduated from St. Vincent Preparatory School in Latrobe, PA, John Carroll University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his final year of studies, Carl met Patricia L. Powers, a nurse at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. They wed on 12 September 1959. Postgraduate training took the young couple to Cincinnati, where their first child, a son, was born. Six years later they welcomed a daughter into their lives. From 1966 to 1968, Carl served in the US Navy, from which he was discharged with the rank of commander. Returning with his family to Akron, Dr. Krill began a long association with Children's Hospital Medical Center. As founding director of the Division of Hematology-Oncology, Carl coordinated the care of Akron-area children afflicted with hemophilia, sickle-cell anemia and other blood disorders, including a special outreach to the Amish and Mennonite communities in Holmes County. As a pediatric clinician, Carl contributed to nationwide studies that improved patient treatment, and for more than 40 years he served the children of Summit County Children Services in its clinic. His compassionate, skillful care of children with leukemia was recognized in 2005 with a Hope Award from the American Cancer Society. Carl was preceded in death by his wife; his brother, Richard M. Krill; and his sisters, Mary E. Sawan and Kathleen T. Danckaert. He leaves his son, Prof. Carl E. Krill III of Ulm, Germany; his daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Gillis, and grandson, Jackson Gillis, all of Pittsburgh; brothers Joseph J. (Sandra) Krill of East Brunswick, NJ, and Kevin B.
