Anthony Costanzo

May 26, 1928 — January 25, 2018

I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.' (2 Timothy 4:7) Anthony Costanzo, a righteous and upright man, completed his earthly journey on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at St. Luke's Lutheran Community. He was born on May 26, 1928, the son of Italian immigrants Rosario and Teresa Costanzo. He grew up in Akron, graduating from North High School and The University of Akron. While attending high school, Anthony took college preparatory classes in secret because his mother did not understand or appreciate the value of a college education. While in college, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in Japan during the time of the Korean Conflict. Following his dutiful service to his country, he returned to the university to complete his studies with a concentration in Physics and Mathematics. After attaining a degree he was employed by the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation (Goodyear Aerospace, Loral Corp.). He retired in June 1990 with 37 years of dedicated service. He loved his work as an electrical engineer. While he was hopelessly practical, he was passionate about art. His many oil paintings will continue to be enjoyed by his family calling to mind the beauty he was able to express via that medium. He also loved to listen to classical and jazz music. He excelled at golf and tennis. When Anthony and his wife Marilyn lived in West Akron, they were parishioners at St. Sebastian Church. After Father Charles Byrider became the pastor, Anthony met with him to suggest and encourage the formation of a parish choir. Soon afterwards the St. Sebastian Parish Choir was instituted and for many years Anthony was a diligent and faithful member of that choir. Anthony was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Santo and Biagio. He is mourned by his devoted wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Genovese); brother Frederick Costanzo; children Rosanna (George) Frankovich, Mark (Tina) Costanzo, Julie (Greg) Archual and Lisa (Mark) Osterhage; grandchildren Lauren (Patrick) Baker, Andrew (Cait) Frankovich, Mary Frankovich, Matthew (Cheyenne) Costanzo, Tim Costanzo, Anthony (Lisa) Archual, Christopher (Ivana) Archual, Mark Archual, Bryan Brown, Rachel Brown, Mark Osterhage, Jr., Nicole Osterhage; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will gather Tuesday, January 30, 9:30 am at St. Francis DeSales Church, 4019 Manchester Road, Akron, with the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 am. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Luke's Lutheran Community and Great Lakes Hospice for their tender, compassionate care of Anthony. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Francis DeSales Church.
