Alberto 'Al' Letta 82 passed away peacefully Aug. 1 2011. A lifelong Akron resident Al was born to Antonio and Louisa Letta on July 5 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Christina Barbuto; and brothers Mario Salvatore and Joseph. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Joann and daughters Michelle DeVitis Charmaine (Rod) Smith and Stephanie (Orlando) Rodriguez. He also leaves his sister Ann Marinucci brother Dominic seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who will lastingly cherish his smile and good-heartedness. Al fought with the Marine Corps in the Korean War and he returned after two years' decorated service in April 1952 to his post at General Tire. Upon retiring from General in 1984 he worked at Portage Country Club but it was his last vocation volunteering as an equipment manager at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School that gave him the greatest fulfillment. The school recognized him for his dedication in 2008 with the Irish Crusader Award and a day of his own 'Al Letta Day.' A formidable athlete in his youth Al kept his love of sports alive through golfing bowling and fishing. His other passions included rooting for the Yankees and voting straight Democratic tickets. He will be fondly remembered by his family and the many honorary members at St. V-M. The family wishes to thank his doctors and the Hospice of Summa staff for their care. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday Aug. 4 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery to follow. After the burial family will receive friends and family at a memorial celebration at St. V-M Student Center 15 N. Maple ST Akron.
