Robert Endres

November 8, 1921 — March 4, 2004

Robert J. Endres retired relocation administrator for the Akron urban Renewal department and avid sportsman died March 4 at The Merriman 209 Merriman Road after a short illness. He was 82 Bob was born in Akron on Nov. 8 1921 to Peter and Elizabeth Endres and lived almost his entire adult life here. He shared 56 of those years with his wife Phillis (Hollenczer) who passed away in December 2002. They had lived on South Arlington Street Fredrick Boulevard and most recently on Mineola Avenue. A superb athlete and ardent sport fan Bob graduated from East High School in 1940 lettering and earning All-City honors in football and wrestling. He won a football scholarship to Colgate University graduating in 1943. He was named to the Little All American Team as an offensive lineman and drew considerable interest from the Chicago Bears. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. After collage though Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater as a member of the military Police and as an interpreter. Once the war ended Bob returned to Akron and entered the baking business the same as his father and brother. He operated the Bon Ton Bakery on South Arlington and then the Bon Ton Bakery on Canton Road in Ellet. Later he was a successful real estate agent with Tarsus Realty before moving into the Akron Urban Renewal Department in the 1960s. He retired in 1986. Bob loved to bowl golf and fish. He and Phyllis made annual trips to Canada with family and friends for walleye fishing. And they both bowled for years at old North Hill Recreation and more recently at Midway Lanes. The mixed doubles team they helped found 40 years ago appropriately named the ''Cream Puffs lives on today. Bob is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Frank and Lucrete Endres of Akron; sisters Elizabeth Kidney and Norma Lindsey of Tucson; nephew and niece-in-law Fred and Kitty Endres of Kent; niece Faye Bradley of Dickinson Texas; niece Cindy Mc Clellan of Mesa AZ; niece Debbie Larson and nephew Jim Lindsey both of Tucson; and dear friends Charlie and Jan von Spiegel of Akron. Bob was an active member of Christ Methodist Church on Mineola Ave where a memorial service will be held Saturday March 13 2004 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Benjamin Black III will be officiating. Cremation has taken place. In Lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made to the church or to the Activities Department of The Merriman.
